How to Double Your eCommerce Conversion Rates
Get the workflow and AI prompts we use to optimize online stores.
I'm sharing the proven process that boosts our conversions daily.
In the next 7 minutes, I’ll guide you through the optimization workflow we’ve used to dramatically increase conversion rates for eCommerce stores.
We apply this for Shopify stores, WooCommerce, and custom platforms—it works everywhere. It’s incredibly effective.
Plus, this process isn’t just for eCommerce—it’s adaptable for landing pages, funnels, or any conversion-driven digital experience.
Once you master this workflow, you can apply it to any goal-oriented page you’re building.
If you’re an online store owner, marketer, or UX/UI/Web designer, this will save you hours every week.
Ready to dive in? Let’s get started 👇
Process Overview
At a high level, the workflow is:
Auditing user behavior to identify friction points using Google Analytics and heatmaps
Optimizing page elements with clear design principles to reduce cognitive load
Iterating through A/B testing for continuous improvement
Polishing layouts for desktop and mobile to maximize conversions
The entire process takes about 15 minutes per page to set up—it’s fast, effective, and even enjoyable.
Auditing User Behavior
To optimize conversions, you need to understand how users interact with your site.
We use Google Analytics to track metrics like device-specific conversion rates, bounce rates, and user demographics (age, gender). Heatmap tools like Hotjar or Crazy Egg help visualize where users click, scroll, or drop off.
Here’s the starting point:
Prompt for Analysis
Analyze your site’s data to answer:
What’s the average conversion rate for my industry? (e.g., eCommerce averages ~2-3%)
Which devices (desktop, mobile) have the highest/lowest conversions?
Where are users dropping off in the funnel?
Are there specific pages or elements causing friction (e.g., confusing navigation, slow load times)?
Steps to Audit:
Set up Google Analytics to track macro (purchases) and micro (clicks, add-to-cart) conversions.
Use heatmaps to identify where users engage or abandon.
Document pain points: slow pages, unclear CTAs, or complex navigation.
This audit gives you a clear picture of what’s working and what needs fixing. If you’re new to analytics, start with Google Analytics’ free setup guide.
Once you’ve got your data, it’s time to optimize 👇
Optimizing Page Elements
The key to higher conversions is reducing visual, motor, cognitive, and memory load for users. This means making your site intuitive, fast, and focused.
Here’s the framework we use:
Optimization Prompt
You are an expert UX designer specializing in eCommerce conversion rate optimization. I need help creating a high-converting product page for my store.
Store Description: [PASTE YOUR STORE/PRODUCT DESCRIPTION HERE]
Design Preferences: [ENTER YOUR STYLE PREFERENCES, e.g., "Clean, modern, minimal, with bold CTAs"]
Please provide 5 detailed optimization strategies for a product page, each focusing on reducing user friction and boosting conversions. Each strategy should:
Specify layout changes (e.g., placement of CTAs, images, or navigation)
Include a clear value proposition or trust-building element
Be optimized for both desktop and mobile
Align with a clean, uncluttered aesthetic
Avoid generic design elements (e.g., stock imagery, vague CTAs)
Include specific copy suggestions (20-25 words max) for CTAs or headers
Your response should contain ONLY the 5 numbered strategies, each starting with “Implement…”.
Example Strategy:
Implement a prominent “Add to Cart” button above the fold, using a contrasting green (#5BC226), with copy: “Add to Cart - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99!”
Fill in:
Store Description: Include your product, target audience, and unique selling points.
Design Preferences: Specify tone (e.g., “trustworthy and professional” or “playful and bold”) and visual style.
You can also attach reference images (e.g., competitor sites, brand guidelines) to guide the aesthetic.
Run this through a tool like Claude or ChatGPT to get tailored strategies. You’ll receive five actionable plans to copy-paste into your site-building process.
Now, let’s see these strategies in action 👇
A/B Testing for Iteration
Testing is the backbone of CRO. You’ll use A/B testing tools like Google Optimize or VWO to experiment with changes and measure their impact.
Here’s how we iterate:
Three Iteration Methods:
a. Major Overhauls (New Layouts)
If a page has low conversions (e.g., <1%), revisit your analytics and test a completely new layout. Example:
“Hey, the product page has a 0.5% conversion rate. Can we test a layout with a larger hero image and a sticky CTA button?”
b. Targeted Tweaks
For smaller changes, adjust specific elements like button colors or copy. Example:
“Keep the layout the same but change the CTA from ‘Buy Now’ to ‘Get Yours Today - Free Returns!’”
c. Structured Templates (JSON)
Use JSON to standardize high-performing layouts across pages. Create a template for product pages (e.g., image left, buy box right) and tweak elements like copy or image size systematically.
Pro Tip: Use a custom GPT or script to convert your best-performing page into a JSON template for reuse. Edit specific fields (e.g., CTA text) while keeping the structure intact.
Polishing for Desktop and Mobile
After iterating, polish your pages to ensure they shine on all devices.
Tools for Polish:
Canva: For quick edits like adding logos or removing unwanted elements.
Kling: For resizing images or expanding backgrounds naturally.
TinyPNG: For compressing images to improve load times.
Checklist:
Ensure CTAs are above the fold on mobile and desktop.
Use high-resolution images (800x800px, WebP format) with SEO-optimized ALT tags.
Add trust badges (e.g., “Free Returns,” “24/7 Support”) near the buy button.
Test page speed with tools like Cloudinary’s WebSpeedTest.
This process takes your page from rough to refined in under 15 minutes.
Voila 🎁
That’s the workflow! In 15 minutes, you can audit, optimize, test, and polish a page to boost conversions.
Use these “MVP” pages to test in live campaigns or pass to a designer for final touches.
