☕ CLAUS'S TAKE

(One opinion. One lesson. One action.)

The 3:1 Rule Every DTC Brand Should Know

The DTC brands that win today aren’t the ones with the biggest ad budgets. They’re the ones that make every customer worth more.

3:1. That’s the LTV ratio Shopify cites as a healthy target.

Why does this matter?

Customer acquisition is getting harder. Shopify reports ecommerce CAC is up 6–12% year over year.

So simply buying more traffic is not a growth strategy. It can be a fast way to burn cash.

The brands I see winning focus on three things:

  • Better economics: Know your real margin after ads, shipping and returns.

  • Higher LTV: Turn first-time buyers into repeat customers.

  • Owned relationships: Build email, SMS and other channels you control.

The big shift: Stop asking, “How do I get more customers?”

Ask: “How much profit can I generate from each customer I already acquired?”

That changes how you think about offers, retention, product launches and marketing.

Your move: Calculate your real LTV ratio. If it’s below 3:1, fix the economics before you pour more money into acquisition.

Quick question: Is your LTV:CAC ratio above 3:1? Hit reply and tell me: Yes or No.

And that’s a wrap. More news, ideas, and ecommerce insights coming your way Tuesday. Until then, keep growing.
