AI shopping just got real — and it’s going to cost you.

What’s new
Shopify now lets merchants sell products directly inside ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout. That means shoppers can ask and buy — all in one chat.

The cost
If you opt in, OpenAI will charge a 4% fee on every sale made through ChatGPT checkout — on top of Shopify’s usual processing fees.

That can push your total fees to about 7% or more depending on your plan and payment setup.

Why it matters

  • Seamless checkout could drive high-intent buyers right to purchase.

  • But the 4% fee is real money coming off your profit.

  • Other AI channels (Google, Microsoft) don’t charge extra — yet.

Should you opt in?
Test performance during the 30-day free trial. If conversions and AOV justify the fee, it can be worth it. If not, you can turn it off.
